Congratulations to Ms. Ho Yuen-tung, Air Crewman Officer III of the Government Flying Service (GFS), for being honored with the Outstanding Individual Contribution to Maritime Search and Rescue Operations Award at the International Maritime Rescue Federation (IMRF) Awards 2025. This prestigious recognition pays tribute to her exceptional courage, selflessness, and professionalism demonstrated during a complex and high-risk rescue mission amid Severe Typhoon Yinxing in November 2024.
The IMRF is a prominent international non-governmental organization (NGO) dedicated to enhancing the capabilities of search and rescue (SAR) organizations worldwide. The awards aim to acknowledge and honor the remarkable contributions of individuals and teams engaged in maritime search and rescue efforts globally. This accolade not only highlights Ms. Ho's exceptional personal efforts but also brings global recognition to the collective excellence and teamwork of the entire GFS department.
Search and rescue operations are a core function of the GFS. Our area of operation extends up to 700 nautical miles (approximately 1,300 kilometers) to the south, encompassing the Hong Kong Flight Information Region (HKFIR) and the Hong Kong Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (HKMRCC) responsible area, which includes the vast majority of the South China Sea. Even during extreme weather conditions such as typhoons, our team remains on duty around the clock, committed to providing timely assistance to those in distress.
This international accolade serves as an impetus for us to further enhance our professional capabilities and deliver even higher standards of service to the people of Hong Kong and the South China Sea region. The GFS will steadfastly uphold its mission to safeguard lives and ensure maritime safety.
