A. System FunctionThe elevator-horn anti-ice system makes sure that ice does not collect on the elevator horn. It also gives a warning to the flight crew if a failure occurs in the system.
B. System ComponentsThe primary components of the system are the:
- Elevator-horn anti-ice fuse (the fuse)
- Elevator-horn anti-ice control-relay (the control relay)
- Current sensor
- Left and right elevator mats
- Elevator anti-ice fail warning-relay
- Elevator-horn anti-ice fail-indicator
C. System OperationThe aircraft 28 V dc electrical supply energized the heater elements in the left and the right elevator mats. The temperature of the heater elements (and thus the temperature of the elevator mats) increases when they are energized. This increase in temperature makes sure that ice does not collect on the elevator horns (or in the space between the elevator horn and the elevator structure, which could lock the elevator).
