30-80-00  ICE DETECTION SYSTEM Back

A. System Function

The ice detection system gives a visual and an audible warning of icing conditions. It also gives a warning if a failure of the ice detection system occurs.

B. System Components

The primary components of the system are the:
  • Ice detector (Ref. Fig. 1)
  • Ice-detect fail relay

C. System Operation

The probe of the ice detector, when energized, operates with an axial vibration at a resonant frequency. During conditions, the ice becomes attached to the probe of the ice detector. The ice that collects on the probe of the ice detector causes a decrease in the resonant frequency of the probe vibration. The ice detector detects this change in frequency and gives an ice warning output. The ice detector sends the ice warning output to the Central Annunciator Panel (CAP) which causes the:
  • Amber ICE DETECT caption on the CAP to come on (Ref. 31-51-00)
  • Amber attention-getters on the coaming panel to flash (Ref. 31-51-00)
  • Audio warning system to give a single chime (Ref. 31-52-00)
