32-20-00  NOSE GEAR AND DOORS Back

A. System Function

The Nose Landing Gear (NLG) has these functions:
  • It gives support to the aircraft when it is on the ground
  • It absorbs the vertical forces during an aircraft landing
  • It gives directional control of the aircraft when it is on the ground
The NLG doors give an aerodynamic shape to the NLG bay. They also help to prevent damage to the components in the NLG bay.

B. System Components

The primary components of the system are the:
  • NLG shock strut
  • NLG door operating linkage
  • NLG doors (Ref. 52-80-00)

C. System Operation

The strut absorbs the vertical loads on the aircraft during taxi, take-off and landing operations. The shortening mechanism (which is a part of the strut) decreases the length of the NLG when it retracts. The linkage opens and closes the NLG doors when the NLG extends or retracts.
