32-40-00  WHEELS AND BRAKES Back

A. System Function

The aircraft uses the wheels to move when it is on the ground. The tires absorb some of the shock loads on the landing gear during aircraft movement on the ground. The brakes reduce the sped of the aircraft during movement on the ground and stop it when necessary.

B. System Operation
  1. The main hydraulic system (Ref. 29-10-00) supplies the normal and the emergency brake system with hydraulic pressure. Operation of the master cylinders, together with the power brake-relay valve, gives the normal and differential brake operation. Operation of the parking/emergency brake-control operates the emergency brake-control valve to give emergency and parking brake operation.
  2. The anti-skid control unit measures the speed of the wheels and adjusts the brake pressures to prevent damage to the tire. It also gives correct brake operation at all speeds and runway conditions. The anti-skid control components only operate during normal brake operation. If a loss of hydraulic power occurs, the accumulators give a specified number of brake operations for safety.
  3. The system gives indications in the flight compartment of:
    • The emergency brake pressure
    • The left and the right brake pressures
    • Low pressure in the main and the emergency brake systems
    • System faults in the anti-skid components
