34-50-00  DEPENDENT POSITION DETERMINING Back

A. System Function

The dependent positoin determining system:
  • Finds the direction (relative bearing) of set ground stations
  • Calculates how far the set ground station is from the aircraft
  • Permits air-traffic-control to identify the aircraft
  • Supplies flight guidance commands to navigate the aircraft point-to-point

B. Sub-systems

(1) The Automatic Direction Finding (ADF) system (Ref. 34-51-00) calculates the relative bearing to a set ground station.

(2) The Distance Measuring Equipment (DME) system (Ref. 34-52-00) calculates the slant-range to a set DME ground station.

(3) The Air Traffic Control (ATC) system (Ref. 34-53-00) identifies the aircraft to the ground ATC stations.

(4) The VOR/ILS/marker system (Ref. 34-54-00) permits the navigation of the aircraft from point-to-point, with position data from ground stations. It alos permits the accurate flight of the aircraft down an ILS approach path.
