34-52-00  DISTANCE MEASURING EQUIPMENT Back

A. System Function

The Distance Measuring Equipment (DME) system measures the slant distance (in nautical miles) between the aircraft and a set ground station (VOR/DME or TACAN).

B. System Components

(1) There are two DME sub-systems. The No.1 DME system and the No.2 DME system.

(2) The primary components of each DME system are:
  • An intergrated navigation unit (Nav Unit) (Ref. Fig. 2)
  • A DME antenna (Ref. Fig. 2)
  • A DME indicator (Ref. Fig. 1)

C. System Operation

(1) The DME system transmits an RF signal to set ground station and receives a reply email. The time between the transmitted RF signal and the received RF reply signal is in proportion to the slant distance. Because the aircraft moves, the distance will change and the rate of change of the distance also gives the:
  • Relative ground speed of the aircarft to or from the ground station
  • Time it will take (time-to-station) to fly to the ground station.

(2) The received RF signal also contains the alphanumeric identification and the audio identification of the ground station.
