55-10-00  HORIZONTAL STABILIZERS Back

  1. General

  2. The horizontal stabilizer makes the aircraft stable in the pitch axis and gives locations to attach the elevators. The horizontal stabilizer is an aluminum alloy assembly with these primary parts:
    • The horizontal stabilizer
    • The leading edge

  3. Component Description and Operation (Ref. Fig. 1)

    1. Horizontal Stabilizer
      • The horizontal stabilizer has a front spar and rear spar which are connected by rib assemblies. The stringers connect the top skin and the bottom skin to the rib assemblies. The skins are attached to the stringers and to the ribs with rivets.

    2. Leading Edge
      • The leading edge (LE) has rib sections connected by inter-costal along its span. The ribs and inter-costal give locations to attach the LE skin. The spigots, on the ribs, set the position of the LE on the front spar of the stabilizer for installation. Bolts attach the LE to landing strips on the front spar of the stabilizer.

      • An access panel in the top of the LE gives access to the structure. A pneumatic anti-ice boot is installed on the LE (Ref. 30-11-00).
