55-30-00  VERTICAL STABILIZER Back

  1. General

  2. The vertical stabilizer makes the aircraft stable in the yaw axis and gives locations to attach the rudder. The vertical stabilizer is an aluminum alloy assembly. The primary parts of the vertical stabilizer are the:
    • Vertical stabilizer
    • Leading edge
    • Dorsal fin

  3. Component Description and Operation (Ref. Fig. 1)

    1. Vertical Stabilizer
      - The vertical stabilizer has a front spar and a rear spar which are connected by rib assemblies. The spanwise diaphragms, along the length of the vertical stabilizer, connect the ribs and give more strength. The skin is riveted to the structure.

    2. Leading Edge
      - The upper and lower leading edge (LE) are made of aluminum alloy. The fin tip assembly is made of fiber glass.
      - The pneumatic anti-ice boot (Ref. 30-11-00) is attached to the upper LE section.

    3. Dorsal Fin - The dorsal fin is the bottom fairing for the vertical stabilizer. It is installed on the drag angles.
